The one thing I had dreaded the most when going into this Masters was learning how to code (or at least, how to use HTML and CSS, I’m nowhere near savvy enough to know how to use JAVA or Python). Turns out: it was one the things I enjoyed the most out of everything. It helped me realize that I could learn something I’d always thought way out of league, and far too removed from my comfort zone to ever attempt it on my own.
Aside from coding, and on a more personal level, I learnt to be more gentle with myself when it comes to assignments and grades. We’re taught so young, especially in the French education system, that you’re only worth as much as your grades, that it becomes deeply entrenched in our subconscious. Here, I learnt that, as long as I pass, it’s all that matters. If I’ve learnt something along the way, that’s all that matters. If I’m not top of the class, no big deal. I can’t believe it took me 20 years to learn something like that, but hey, better late than never.
