During my internship for two months with the Budeiri library in Jerusalem, I was doing two tasks, the first one was focused on the online catalog of the manuscript collection; adding new entries, checking existed lists, fixing and arranging the data in the fields. all using MARC record method.
A MARC record is a Machine-Readable Cataloguing record means that one particular type of machine, a computer, can read and interpret the data in the cataloging record.
The information from a catalog card cannot simply be typed into a computer to produce an automated catalog. The computer needs a means of interpreting the information found on a cataloging record. The MARC record contains a guide to its data, or little « signposts, » before each piece of bibliographic information.
The second part of the internship was examining the history of the family and its famous figures by reading the archive documents like this one below which is a congratulation letter on the occasion of the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan from a scholar named Muhaiye al-Dinn al-Muhtaddi to Sheikh Mussa Budeiri in the year 1321 AH 1903 AD.
On the whole, this internship was a useful experience. I have gained new knowledge and skills. I achieved several of my learning goals. I got an insight into professional practice. I learned the different facets of work. The internship was also good to find out what my strengths and weaknesses are. This helped me to define what skills and knowledge I have to improve in the coming time.
